I, the undersigned, have been given to understand on signing the said agreement, that our salary would be equivalent to £100 per annum; (and notice to that effect was posted in the Police Station) but now I know that at the current rate of exchange, it would not amount to £88. I have been informed by the Agent who engaged us, (Inspector Hogge of Singapore) that the value of the Dollar ranged from 4/- to 4/6 and never below 4/-, and were also informed by him that the Clause referring to Family Remittances, only applied when the rate of Exchange was above 4/1½ per dollar.
That if the Government does not permit us to remit through the Crown Agents, at 4/2 per dollar, we pray that we be paid in Sterling money, or its equivalent in dollars to the above amount, viz: £100 per annum, calculated on the average value of dollar for each past year.
